Credit Requirements per Grade
6th Grade: Language Arts (1 credit), Math (1 credit), Social Studies (1 credit), Science (1 credit), Physical Education (0.5 credit), Art/Music/Health (0.5 credit). Total = 5 credits.

7th Grade: Language Arts (1 credit), Math (1 credit), Social Studies (1 credit), Science (1 credit), Physical Education (0.5 credit), Elective (0.5 credit). Total = 5 credits.

8th Grade: Language Arts (1 credit), Math (1 credit), Social Studies (1 credit), Science (1 credit), Physical Education (0.5 credit), Elective (0.5 credit). Total = 5 credits.

Although the Monroe Virtual Middle School only requires 5 credits to be earned each year, we strongly encourage students to take additional elective credits. Electives can include, but are not limited to: Art, Choral/Instrumental Music, Foreign Language. Students can also take a Health Elective in 7th or 8th Grade to meet the high school graduation requirement.

American Civil War-The Southern Perspective (Social Studies-Am History)
Course Description: The American Civil War was very unique and different from previous wars. Half a nation fought against the other half over States rights and slavery. You will be using this Independent Study course to learn about James Johnston Pettigrew, a young lawyer living in Charleston, South Carolina. Using newspaper, letters, diaries and regimental histories of the time, Pettigrew’s Fictional journal offers a portrait of General Pettigrew and his time, including insights into the one issue that so identified the time, slavery.
 
American Government Independent Study
Course Type: Correspondence
Course Description: This independent study class of American Government introduces students to the basic concepts of government and politics, civic life, historical government documents and political figures.
 
American Historical Film Study (Social Studies)
Course Description: American Historical Film Study can be a vital part of a child's learning experience. The American Historical Film Study course allows children who have a strong visual/spatial learning style to learn in their own unique way.

 
Beginning Cooking
Course Type: Correspondence
Course Description: This class is appropriate for students who have little or no cooking experience but would like to develop their cooking skills. The purpose of this class is to help individuals expand their ability to cook while improving their math, reading, and writing skills. The beginning to cook class will help you to prepare for independent living.
 
Book Reports for a Grade (English)
Course Description: Reading is a vital part of a child's development. It is an essential skill to learn, with the hopes of carrying an enjoyment of reading into adulthood.

Students who wish to take this class and earn one-half credit (0.5) can do so only with the recommendation of their teacher; as it was developed for student looking for an academic challenge.

To earn one-half credit (0.5) the student must read 1200-1500 pages from 3-6 different books.
 
Book Reports for Credit (English)
Course Description: Reading is a vital part of a child's development. It is an essential skill to learn, with the hopes of carrying an enjoyment of reading into adulthood.

To earn one-half (0.5) credit in Book Reports for Reluctant Readers, the student must read 1200-1500 pages from 3-6 different books. The student may choose his/her own books, but they must be age and school appropriate.

To earn 1 credit in Book Reports for Reluctant Readers, the student must read 2400 to 3000 pages from 6 - 12 books. The student may choose his/her own books, but they must be age and school appropriate.
 
Character Development for Teens (Elective)
Course Description: You will be using this Independent Study Course to gain insight and learn proven principles to help with the tough issues and life changing decisions teens face everyday. Students can earn 1/2 credit for completing this course.
 
Cooking & Nutrition (Elective)
Course Type: Correspondence
Course Description: The purpose of this class is to help you improve your food preparation skills and to increase your independence in preparing foods. Cooking is a life skill that can be developed with practice. The goal of this class is to give you the opportunity to practice preparing foods so that you will improve your cooking skills. Please read all the directions before you begin.

To earn one-half (0.5) elective credit in Cooking and Nutrition, the student must complete all of the assignments listed.
 
Creating Real World PowerPoint Presentation (Elective)
Course Description: A PowerPoint presentation is a wonderful tool to communicate ideas in a visual way. The real importance of learning computers skills is to be able to apply your knowledge to create something of your own. MS PowerPoint is used extensively today as presentation software packages are used in work, education, and at home. Plus, it is fun, easy to learn, and provides a wonderful creative outlet for the user.

To earn one-half (0.5) elective credit in MS-PowerPoint - Level ONE, the student must choose four (4) of the MS PowerPoint Slide shows topics.
 
Creating Real World Publishing Publications (Elective)
Course Description: MS-Publisher is a unique software package that has a vast variety of communication templates throughout the entire program. You can create web pages, brochures, flyers, letterhead, business cards and many more publications that can be used at work, educational courses, and at home.

To earn one-half (0.5) elective credit in MS-Publisher - Level ONE, the student must create and complete one tri-fold brochure, and five of the choices listed.
 
Creating Real World Spreadsheets and Charts (Elective)
Course Description: MS-Excel is a unique software package that allows the user to create spreadsheets and charts. A spreadsheet allows you to calculate data and then chart your findings either by a chart or by the actual spreadsheet. MS-Excel allows you to work with numbers by addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, averaging and so much more.

To earn one-half (0.5) elective credit in MS-Excel - Level ONE, the student must create and complete eight projects.
 
Cultural Arts (Elective)
Course Description: Cultural activities are an important part of education of the whole child and vital to the student's development as an individual.

To earn one-half (0.5) credit in Cultural Arts for Credit the student must participate in a minimum of 60 hours of art activities.

Exploring & Learning from Inspirational Historic & Other Websites (Elective)
Course Description: Historical places and Inspirational websites have powerful and provocative stories to tell. These sites are not only interesting but recall the events that shaped history and help us learn from people who faced similar situations and issues as our own. You will be using this Independent Study Course to explore various inspirational and historical websites.
 
Hands on Art (Art)
Course Description: Art activities are an important part of education and important to the students development as an individual and recognition of the need to educate the whole child.

To earn one-half (0.5) credit in Hands-on Art the student must participate in a minimum of 60 hours of art activities.

Hands on Music (Music)
Course Description: The School District of Monroe realizes the importance of music in the life of an individual. Many musical experiences are not confined to a traditional school setting. There are a variety of musical activities/experiences in which a student can participate outside of the school environment which will foster student growth and enhance appreciation for all types of music. Music activities are an important part of education of the whole child and vital to student development.

To earn one-half (0.5) credit in Hands-on Music the student must participate in a minimum of 60 hours of music activities.

Journal Writing for a Grade (English)
Course Description: People are increasingly interested in recording their thoughts and feelings. It is estimated that there are 12 million journals and diaries sold a year that reflects this writing trend. Journals have played an important role in our understanding of history. From cave dwellers' scratchings in stone to the invention of parchment paper to the beginnings of formal education, the instinct to write, to document, to tell has been strong.

Students who wish to take this class and earn one-half credit (0.5) can do so only with the recommendation of their teacher; as it was developed for students looking for an academic challenge.

 
Journal Writing for Credit (English)
Course Description: The Monroe School District believes that writing is a vital part of a student's development. It is an essential skill to learn, with the hope of carrying the enjoyment of writing into adulthood. The best way to get into the habit of writing is to keep a journal.

To earn one-half (.5) credit in Journal Writing for English Credit, the student must complete 35 of the possible 75 journal topics. For each topic you select you must write at least 150 words.
 
Music Theatre Through Film For Credit (Music)
Course Description: Musical theatre holds an important place in the cultural and social fabric of our society. Combining the elements of European opera and American minstrel shows, musicals reached their zenith in the early twentieth century in the theatres of New York's Broadway district. With the advent of better sound recording techniques for motion pictures, the Broadway musical made the natural transition from stage to screen. You will explore the time-honored classics and gain a better understanding of how the stories, songs and choreography come together to provide a unique theatrical experience.

We strongly encourage you to attend a live theatrical performance (high school, community, regional or professional production) in place of viewing a film.
 
Parent/Student Independent Study Project for Credit (Any Category)
Course Description: The staff at the Monroe Virtual MIddle School adheres to the principle that a sound educational program should develop within the student the desire and the ability to learn on their own. There are many other advantages to independent study. One is that it can be the springboard for lifetime study pursuing personal interests. Where better to begin this habit of pursuing personal interests than middle school. Once a student becomes motivated by something that interests them he or she can make use of many learning resources. The student is motivated by his or her own interests, not by the assignments of the teacher.

To earn one-half credit (0.5) the Parent/Student Independent Study Project should entail approximately 60 hours of work. To earn one credit (1.0) the student should complete approximately 120 hours of work.

Physical Education for Credit (Health/Physical Education)
Course Description: Students are required by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) to complete one and one-half (1.5) credits of physical education over grades 9-12 and one and one-half (1.5) credits over grades 6-8. Credit may be earned through an individual fitness program developed with approval from the Virtual School program coordinator. Middle school students are required to take one quarter (0.25) credit for each semester in attendance.

Students earn one half (0.5) credit for every 75 hours of physical activity.

Service Learning for Credit (Required)
Course Description: Monroe Virtual High School (MVHS) diploma students and Monroe Virtual Middle School (MVMS) students are required to complete one-half (0.5) credit of service learning.

Work Exploration for Credit (Elective)
Course Description: One of the unique features of the Independent Learning program is the opportunity for students to earn middle school credit for exploring different options for what kind of work they may want to do in the future. Students who choose work exploration learning may earn one half (0.5) credit for 150 hours of successfully completed work exploration. Students may earn a maximum of one (1) credit toward their middle school education through the work exploration option.
