Course Description: Musical theatre holds an important place in the cultural and social fabric of our society. Combining the elements of European opera and American minstrel shows, musicals reached their zenith in the early twentieth century in the theatres of New York's Broadway district. With the advent of better sound recording techniques for motion pictures, the Broadway musical made the natural transition from stage to screen. You will explore the time-honored classics and gain a better understanding of how the stories, songs and choreography come together to provide a unique theatrical experience.
We strongly encourage you to attend a live theatrical performance (high school, community, regional or professional production) in place of viewing a film.
